I never imagined what a menswear fashion show would be like. When thinking of fashion shows, the glitz and glamour of the famous women supermodels would always pop into my head. Little did I know menswear fashion week is just as important to the fashion industry. From the abstract collections to the classic pieces we know and love from our favorite designers, each show is entirely different in so many ways. While some are obvious with the inspiration behind the collection, others leave each person interpreting their own ideas surrounding each piece.
Although I would argue that some pieces are unrealistic for the ‘everyday’ man, there were some definite favorites within each collection. When thinking of the well-rounded man, I picture someone who is wearing clothing that is suitable for each occasion, not simply jeans and a plain t-shirt. From active wear to a suit and tie, Menswear Spring/Summer 2017 covered all of the bases in creating this person for me.
Daks
A mixture of London and India were apparent on the runway during Daks Spring/Summer 2017 show. Open, flowing clothes showing what is underneath, with a relaxed style fitting the body loosely.
Gucci
The theme of travel is apparent throughout the entire collection. With classic British inspired coasts to tropical jackets, Gucci’s collection covered coast to coast. Contrast is key in Gucci’s Spring/Summer collection.
Dirk Bikkembergs
With a unique combination of block colors and heavy chains, Dirk Bikkembergs left much up to the imagination of the viewers.
Boglioli
The central theme for Spring/Summer 2017 is centered around soft tailoring- summer coats, knit sweaters, and blazers covered the runway in addition to straight trousers in neutral colors with some light blue spread throughout.
Fendi
A fluid and playful collection with soft fabrics. Every piece is reversible, allowing each outfit to be adapted in completely different ways.
Versace
A combination of Versace classics like leather jackets with additional pieces throughout. A twist on the usual with a focus on fit for the menswear suits.
Miaoran
Genderless aesthetic with colorful embroideries of fish swimming on white fabrics were the few, if any, decorative elements of Miaoran’s show. The main focus was on clean design, and geometric shapes adapting to the body for a genderless appeal.
Canali
Very relaxed outerwear with flowing lines. The suits and trousers have unusual pockets on their formal jackets. Leather bomber jackets and light-weight trench coats were also seen throughout the runway.
Salvatore Ferragamo
With special attention to the abstract in patterns on otherwise classic pieces, the men on the Ferragamo runway sported tailored suits in dark colors with a splash of lime yellow and electric blue.
DSquared2
Showcasing the many cultures throughout the world through destroyed denim, studs, and flower prints, while also highlighting statement pieces such as pink sequined boots to celebrate queer culture just a week after the mass shooting in Orlando.
Dolce & Gabbana
With different types of music as the inspiration for the line, there is plenty of mixing and matching that creates an atmosphere of a glamorous life. The goal is to create a personalized style for everyone, just as much as music does.
Moncler Gamme Bleu
With dark and neutral colors such as beige and green all throughout the show, Moncler highlights on their classic down jackets, while introducing shirts and trousers covered in many different sized pockets for the perfect outdoorsmens outfit.
Prada
Arguably one of the most unique shows this year, Prada Spring/Summer 2017 showcased a completely new combination: menswear combined with camping gear. Classic shirts and trousers combine with raincoats and hiking shoes to create a very unique look.
Giorgio Armani
Closing Milan Fashion Week, Girogio Armani produced a lineup for the modern man, with a more laid-back collection. Fluid fabrics, soft shapes, all with the classic refinement we know and love.
